Day 5: What’s your favourite episode?

I love both “Midnight” and “The Edge of Destruction” serial. In both we learn about human nature, and in both there’s a strong air of darkness surrounding the things that happen. And as far as production goes, both are very well done examples of “bottle episodes”, making them even more fascinating.

"Destruction" was the first Classic Who serial that genuinely scared me. Sweet, innocent little Susan, the Doctor’s granddaughter, threatening Ian with scissors? The Doctor attempting to drug Barbara and Ian? And that’s only the surface.

Then, of course, Midnight is filled with layers of questions about humanity and how easily we can be swayed and used, making it terrifying in a way similar to two other sci-i masterpieces: 1984 and The Giver.

All in all, I think that Doctor Who and art in general is most beautiful when it questions the universe we live in, and these two nightmarish stories do that wonderfully.
