hey real talk for a second
the deadline for this petition is in THREE WEEKS
and it’s not even halfway to meeting the goal.
If it doesn’t meet the goal, IT’S OVER. THE PETITION IS REMOVED. THE END.
I know it might be a little annoying to take a whole two minutes out of your life to make an account and sign this, but that little annoyance pales in comparison to the fact that right now, MASSIVE CORPORATIONS NOW HAVE THE POWER TO CONTROL HOW THE INTERNET IS RUN
Please, DON’T sit back and think, “Oh, everyone else will sign it. I’ll just reblog.” No. There are literally THOUSANDS of people thinking the exact same thing. There’s a reason this post has almost 20,000 notes more than the number of signatures: It’s because people are liking and reblogging without signing it.
Don’t fall victim to the bystander effect. DO take this very, very seriously. The only requirement for signing is that you are 13 years or older. You don’t have to be a U.S. citizen to sign. So please, take the two minutes. Sign the petition. It’s the only hope we have to fix this.
That’s it! I’m fucking tired of screaming “REMEMBER RICHARD O’DWYER”! You know who I’m gonna post now?

This is Sumner Redstone. SUMNER FUCKING REDSTONE, the owner of this wonderful company called…

THE BIGGEST FUCKING OMNI-CONGLOMERATE OF THE MEDIA INDUSTRY! They own… EVERYTHING! They own pretty much all the industry, but what they’ve YET to own is the internet! And they are very close to owning it all, and we will have to say goodbye to everything. That means:
NO MORE WIKIPEDIA
NO MORE YOUTUBE
NO MORE TUMBLR
NO MORE FACEBOOK
NO MORE REDDIT
NO MORE INTERNET FREEDOM
Do you people realize the importance of this petition? If you do, sign it! If you don’t, then think about this:
Sumner Redstone and his goons at CNET *which is owned by Viacom* deliberately and frivilously distributed file sharing software from 1998 to now. These names include Napster, Kazaa, iMesh, Limewire, Bearshare, WinMX, Frostwire, BitTorrent, uTorrent, JUST TO NAME A FEW! These P2P file sharing systems came bundled with viruses and trojans which were used to gather your IP addresses, your name, your location, and so much more! Ever wonder why you got a threatening letter from the RIAA or MPAA? VIACOM TIPPED THEM OFF WITHOUT YOU EVEN KNOWING IT!
Well, not anymore! SIGN THIS PETITION AND MAKE IT KNOWN TO THE FCC: VIACOM CAN NOT AND WILL NOT CONTROL THE INTERNET AND FORCE US TO ABIDE BY THEIR RULES! THEY CAN PAY OFF AT&T/COMCAST, VERIZON, AND ALL THE OTHERS WITH TRILLIONS, BUT WE ARE THEIR CUSTOMERS, AND WE WON’T STAND FOR BAD BUSINESS LIKE THIS!
If you haven’t signed this, and you live in the United States, I genuinely wonder why. Let me explain why this is important.
The United States phone system went through a similar thing. Because the phone system was declared a common carrier, phone companies are not allowed to choose who gets signal quality, who gets an instant connection/who doesn’t, and so on and so on. It also means that local guys have access to the lines so they can actually foster competition. Meaning better prices, better service, and more options.
Ever called your net company and essentially felt like you were told ‘lol good luck with all that anger, buddy, we’re all you’ve got’? This could, if I understand the law correctly, help change that. Local guys will be able to set up shop, and suddenly comcast, verizon, time warner, etc will no longer be the only game in town if you don’t want dial-up. You will have options.
This law will also prevent tiered access. If you haven’t seen the photo going around, let me put it right out there for you.

This is what companies want to do. See that small text down there? ‘Limited access to approved websites’. This is a mockup made by pro-neutrality people, but it’s an example much like leaked stuff straight from the net companies.
Let me spell it out for you. Whatever you’re paying now, add -at least- $20, -if- you’re lucky if you want to see tumblr ever again. Because this site is a bandwidth hog. You know it, I know it, they know it, and they will exploit that to the fullest. If you want access to your RP blog, enjoy paying that money. If you want access to all your friends on here that you don’t have contact deets for, enjoy paying that money. If you want this site and -anything- it offers, enjoy paying that money. Because this will become the industry standard.
If you live outside the united states, this should scare you, because of something called best practices. Taken from Wikipedia (which, by the way, I could not access on lower-tier plans): ‘A best practice is a method or technique that has consistently shown results superior to those achieved with other means, and that is used as a benchmark.’ The United States sets a lot of these, corporationwise. We’re a huge nation with extremely diverse demographics. Companies in other nations, in many cases, look to ours, find what works, and implement it.
Now, keep in mind the following is bullshit of the worst caliber, but I can see it happening. You live in, let’s say… Holland. You wanna access tumblr, you’re even paying for your shiny, new high-tier plan that costs more. Tumblr is an America-based website. Because your telco has decided American best practices are the thing to do? You’re not getting access on your shiny, new high-tier plan because A) you didn’t tick the ‘I want access to foreign sites for an extra $10 a month’ box when you signed up, B) you didn’t choose the highest-tier plan, or C) your telco simply doesn’t wanna give people access to foreign sites! All of those are possible without net neutrality.
Go sign up for the site. Go sign this. A petition to deport that pop star moron with a penchant for doing dumb things got signed. This needs signing, yet it hasn’t been.
Guys. It literally takes under 3 mins to sign up and sign the petition. Do it. It’s for keeping the ‘net the way it is!

This is the current signature count for the petition to restore Net Neutrality. As you can see it has a very long way to go.
Come on people I know there are at least 64,000 of you on tumblr who haven’t signed this yet. Click here to do so
If you have already signed be sure to share the link so that the word will spread.
